Tamme Farm Herb Garden: Health and Food - the use of exotic herbs and vegetables

19 September | 10:00–16:00
Autumn is the time for harvesting fruits. On the Day of Countryside Living, come to the Tamme Farm Herb Garden and participate in exciting workshops: using exotic herbs and vegetables in cooking, collecting and preserving seeds, and using plants for dental health.
You can taste snacks and drinks made from herbs grown in the garden. Find out how pepino dulce tastes, what delicious dishes can be made from sweet potatoes, lemon beebrush, or sweetscented marigold, and much more.
Program:
10:00–10:30 Guided tour of the Herb Garden with the hostess amidst wonderful scents and flavors
The hostess of the Herb Garden, Heli Viedehof, will take you on an exciting sensory journey through the collection garden, where over 500 different aromatic, flavorful, and medicinal plants grow. You can get to know the herbs by touching, sniffing, and tasting them. You will hear fascinating stories about the history, use, and beneficial properties of herbs. A true therapy for all your senses!
11:00–12:00 Nature as a dentist. How plants support your dental health and practical tips for daily oral care
In the workshop dedicated to dental health, dentist Dr. Tiiu Umalas will talk about how to maintain healthy teeth with natural plants and share simple tips for daily oral care. Participants in the practical workshop will take home a natural toothpaste along with knowledge of which plants are suitable for making homemade toothpaste.
13:00–14:00 Grandma's Garden Seed Preservation Workshop
In the workshop dedicated to seeds and heirloom varieties, the hostess of Grandma's Garden, Tiia Morfin, shares skills and valuable experiences in growing and preserving seeds. Participating in the workshop will enrich you with knowledge on how to preserve valuable heirloom varieties, ensure diversity on your table, and reduce dependence on store-bought seeds. In the workshop, you will learn how to collect, clean, and store seeds of food plants and farm flowers so that they last for many years.
It is especially valuable to purchase directly from Tiia seeds of heirloom farm flowers and culinary, medicinal, and food plants that are not found in stores. This way, you can grow resilient and enduring plants for several seasons in a row – if you know how to collect seeds correctly.
In the workshop, we will discuss:
how to collect, clean, and store seeds of different food plants and farm flowers;
which plants are easiest to propagate;
the basics of plant reproduction and a bit about pests.
In the practical part:
we will learn how to clean seeds,
make seed envelopes,
share the seeds brought along.
In addition, interested parties can purchase seeds of heirloom farm flowers and culinary and medicinal plants.
The herb garden café is open, offering the legendary herb pies of the Tamme Farm hostess, delicious sweet and savory pastries, and a selection of herb teas and coffee. In the herb garden shop, you can taste and purchase products made on the farm and shop from the largest selection of herb seedlings in the Baltics, still suitable for planting in autumn.
Guests are welcome from 10:00 to 16:00.
THE EVENT IS FREE FOR ALL PARTICIPANTS!
