Kiršteins’ Decorative Garden

The Kiršteins Landscape Garden is harmoniously embedded in the Tūja coastline, delicately highlighting and complementing its most beautiful scenery. Formerly known to garden lovers as the Tūja Cascade, or Kiršteins Garden, the current name most accurately captures the essence of the place. Ojārs Kiršteins began designing the garden in 2002 with the support of his wife Zigrīda. He gradually succeeded in making the garden’s splendour accessible and enjoyable in all seasons.

The garden has a beautiful view of the sea as well as a picturesque gully with a cascade of waterfalls, which is particularly delightful in early spring and on rainy days in the summer and autumn. During dryer periods of the year it turns into a river of colourful rocks. Large trees surround the gully and, together with the wide lawn, create a sense of scenic spaciousness. An interesting stone composition surrounded by colourful pebbles sits on the main lawn accentuating the centre of the garden. Snow-white Italian and Greek pebbles lining the borders of the flower beds complement the garden’s collection of assorted stones.

Stepped plantations along the sides and cherry plum and thuja hedges highlight the spaciousness of the landscaped garden. Here you can view a rich collection of conifers, as well as clusters of ornamental shrubs – rhododendrons, barberries, hydrangeas – and an abundant selection of perennial plants. The garden is at its most colourful in the full bloom of the summer when begonias, daylilies, rudbeckias, marigolds, dahlias and up to 2.5m tall wild canna lilies. A rock-climbing facility has been created near the gully.
