Saare-Tõrvaaugu Gardening Farm

The Saare-Tõrvaaugu gardening farm is famous for its table grapes grown by the hosts. The grapes can be tasted on site and purchased to go.  In addition, the collection includes both classic apple varieties as well as lilacs bred in Estonia. Also, some exotic gems such as cactuses, kumquat, orange tree, etc. There are about 200 different plants in the garden, and a unique beehive. The gardening farm has received the highest prize in the parish as being the best deed of the past years.

A few years ago, Saare-Tõrvaaugu exhibited one of Estonia’s largest cactus collections and many special lemon trees, but unfortunately, these were destroyed in the fire of 2017. By virtue of the donations by good people, the cactus house has been restored, though in a smaller scope, and numerous types of apricots and citrus fruits are growing.

What can you see at the Saare-Tõrvaaugu gardening farm?

Of exotic drupaceous fruits, the farm features peach, plumcot and nectarine trees. There is also a unique permanent exhibition with plexiglass inner walls in the garden – a beehive with its busy inhabitants providing comb honey; extracted honey is also made in the farm.

The Saare-Tõrvaaugu Gardening Farm features:

• 64 apple varieties – summer, autumn and winter apple trees, columnar apple trees;
• 16 pear varieties – common pear, devoe, Belorusskaja pozdnjaja, Järve, etc.;
• 26 plum varieties – early, mid- and late-season maturing;
• 27 cherry varieties – sweet cherries and various types of sour cherries;
• 60 grape vine varieties – for open land and for greenhouses;
• cactus house.

What can you do in the garden?

A tour around the gardening farm can be taken with a guide or on your own. The diverse world of fruit trees and berry shrubs can be explored, knowledge obtained, and fruits tasted during the harvesting season. Garden produce – apples, grapes and local honey – can be purchased. Harvesting days are popular – the gardener Harri Poom will teach the guests how to trim trees and will share his knowledge to gardening enthusiasts.
